Burbank Leader Shines Their Business Spotlight on E-Geniuses

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

The headline is, He’s technically a computer genius.

The article summary reads:

“For E-Geniuses founder and owner Joey Mariano, fixing a computer and returning it to a customer in tip-top shape is only half of what an experience at his new computer repair store entails.”

Very well written. We appreciate the exposure.

Here’s the link to the article about E-Geniuses Computer Repair Shop in Burbank.

Weak Wireless Signal

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

edimax_range

The client was experiencing a very weak wireless signal. We arrived at his home and discovered that his computer was located on one side of the building while the wireless access point was on the other side. Normally it is recommended that a wireless access point should be located in a centralized position but the tenant arrangements prevented such a setup. Although the wireless access point had the ability to project a signal, testing with other devices brought us to the conclusion that the building construction (electrical wires, pipes, conduits) or furniture/appliances (large metallic surfaces such as a refrigerator or metal shelves) is interfering with the wireless signal.

Our solution was to install a repeater in a location that experiences a good wireless signal and through trail and error, find a suitable location where the repeater can bypass any interference and deliver a strong signal to our client. Unfortunately, the client’s landlord was apprehensive about our installation of the repeater and felt that he could do it himself, even after our client’s pleadings. Overall our client was grateful that we brought the needed signal repeater but dismayed that his landlord did not allow us to install the device. Hopefully the issue gets resolved as our client paid good money for his computer and wireless Internet is part of his rental agreement.

Here is what the client had to say in his own words:

“I am totally satisfied with your service as well as the people. When I called, the technicians were very accommodating. The guys really put their all into helping me out. Even though we weren’t able to complete the service, for other reasons not related to E-Geniuses’ services, they still called me back to follow up with me. The guy called later on just to make sure everything was taken care of.”

Computer Repair Service for FIDM Students

Computer Repair for Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) Students

We happen to get a lot of students from FIDM since our main office is near, only  a block away from the campus. We received a call from a person who was having a problem with their laptop not turning on. Since she needed it for school it was important that she get it repaired as soon as possible.

The problem ended up being the adaptor. We found one and purchased it. We also offered to optimize the computer by removing unecessary startup items and upgrading the RAM by 1GB.

The client was happy that not only was her computer working, it was also much more responsive than it was before.

Another common issue with students is their hard drives fail and they do not have backups. Make sure to always backup your important data. Hard drives will eventually fail.

How We Fix Your Computer Problems

It was a Busy Day!

Mondays are usually our busiest day and today was no exception.  I had 4 PC’s to fix by the end of the day.  I started with the Sony VAIO, it had the “blue screen of death” problem.  Lucky for me, I had seen this error code before and knew it was the wireless NIC card.  I replaced the card with an external usb device and no more “blue screen of death”.

The second computer I got to was a dell desktop.  It would not power on.  We had a spare power supply lying around so I hooked it up to the PC.  It worked perfectly so I had to remove the old one and mounted the new one.

Third PC was an Acer laptop. It was having problem with it’s built-in wireless card. I hooked a wire to the ethernet port to see if it was a firewall on the laptop. The wire tested fine and I also did a virus scan. The virus scan was negative so I disabled the internal wireless card and connect a PC card. After several minutes of streaming audio test, the new card was the cure.

Fourth PC was also a laptop but this time it was from Gateway. The power would not turn on whether it was plugged or on battery. Checking the power cord, we quickly found the problem. A segment of the wire was stripped thus no power was going through it.

Computer Not Working | Hard Drive Maintenance

Hard Drive Maintenance in Glendale

I arrived at a referred customer’s house in Glendale to look at an older computer that could not start up Windows XP properly.  After running a hard drive diagnostic program and fixing the problem, or so I thought, we were able to trace the problem to a video card error.  The family was ecstatic that they can surf the internet and email their friends and family again.  They were so happy at our service that they trusted us to fix their Power Mac Pro, a $4000 computer.  I explained that a Mac system is a lot more complicated that a PC and would require us to work on it back at the shop.

After several hours of taking everything apart and testing the components, we concluded that it was a faulty power supply.  Since the power supply was proprietary, we had to special or the unit.  It took the unit over a week to arrive.  We installed it, tested, and brought it back to the client’s house.  Once again, they were happy with the service and gave us another task.

This new task was to install and network router in their home so they can share the internet connection between the PC, XBox, and Mac.  Luckily I had an extra router in my car and was able to set it up for them without having to make another trip.

Virus, Spyware and Malware Removal in Glendale, CA

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

One morning we received a call from a frantic homemaker.  She had explained that her computer system seems to slow down dramatically.  From experience, we suspected that it was computer virus related but we couldn’t be sure until we physically saw the computer.  Since she had to take care of her almost 2 years old daughter, there was no way for her to come into the office.  When I met her in person, the real story came out.  She had recently opened an email with an invitation in it.  When she realized what she had done, it was too late.  I was able to install our usual perferred antivirus programs but was not able to do any updates.  After several minutes of configuring, I was able to get all the programs updated and ran a scan of the computer.  One of the program found 38 viruses and malware while another found 17 more.  The computer had Norton Antivirus installed so the customer was confused as to how the virus slipped past the protection.  I had to explain to her that we use at least 3 different antivirus programs everytime we do a clean up because there is no one program that can catch them all.  After a couple of hours, we were able to remove all the viruses and the customer was happy that she doesn’t have to see the error pop-up messege every minute.
